College Football – Ohio State Buckeyes Odds To Make CFP 2019
Urban Meyer may no longer be around, but that doesn’t mean the Ohio State Buckeyes went with him. During his seven seasons in Columbus Meyer won over 90 percent of his games and captured the first College Football Playoff following the 2014 season. Meyer didn’t depart because the talent level faded. In fact it’s just the opposite. New coach Ryan Day is set up for success with perhaps the best collection of players in the Big Ten.

Day got a taste of being the guy last year taking over when Meyer was suspended. That’s a lot different than holding down the job permanently. And he won’t have Dwayne Haskins chucking the ball all over the yard. The Buckeyes may slip a bit offensively in 2019, but the defense has the skill to be much better than it was last season. The schedule is favorable until the season-ender in Ann Arbor, and if the Buckeyes can avoid a collapse like they had against Purdue last year and Iowa in 2017, a CFP berth is waiting.

Ohio State Buckeyes 2019 Season Preview
There will be a different look around the Buckeyes this season. Not only is Meyer enjoying retirement, the team will break in a new quarterback after Haskins’ record breaking season a year ago. Haskins completed 70 percent of his throws for more than 4,800 yards and 50 touchdowns, leading the Buckeyes second-ranked passing attack. OSU amassed over 364 yards per game through the air and 535.7 total yards in 2018.
That production was needed since the team slipped a bit defensively. Keeping the chains moving falls in the hands of Georgia transfer and former top-five prospect Justin Fields. He’ll be hard-pressed to match what Haskins did, but he won’t be asked to. Fields has a strong arm and he’s more mobile than Haskins, giving the offense an element it lacked last season.
With six starters gone there will be more of an emphasis on running the football. That’s because J.K. Dobbins is good and going to be better at doing that. Splitting time in the backfield last season, Dobbins reeled off 1,053 yards and 10 scores on the ground. He’s the centerpiece this year with little experience behind him. Dobbins is an elusive as a runner and receiver and should put up big numbers as an every-down back.
Looking to shore up a leaky defense, Day attracted a few big-time assistants to the program. And they came from Michigan making the hires that much sweeter. As a whole the group wasn’t physical last year. The secondary is strong and the line is bursting with potential. There is no excuse for this group not to be better, and it has to be better for the Buckeyes to sniff another CFP berth.

Meyer set the bar high during his time in Columbus going 83-9 in seven seasons with two CFP appearances and a national title in the inaugural CFP season. A new regime could lead to some regression, but the program is in good shape. And the schedule offers Day a great chance to continue the winning tradition.
There are no Power 5 teams on the non-conference slate and all three matchups are at home. Five Big Ten road games are scheduled and after what happened at Purdue last season, one of those could be troublesome. An improved Nebraska and last year’s West champ Northwestern are the toughest roadies before the Buckeyes head to the Big House to end the regular season in a game that likely decides the Big Ten East champ and has CFP implications.
