College Football – Texas Longhorns Odds To Make CFP 2019 - 2020
Tom Herman was brought in to turn the floundering Texas Longhorns program around. After posting 10 wins in 2018 for their first double-digit win campaign in nearly a decade, Herman and the Horns have their sights set on bigger things. A trip to the College Football Playoff this season will be a huge undertaking. After all the Horns have to battle Oklahoma at least once and they have a non-conference date with LSU.

Still, there hasn’t been this much excitement in Austin since the 2009 season when the Horns played in the BCS Championship. They beat Oklahoma last regular season and took down Georgia in the Sugar Bowl for a pair of marquee victories. They barely got by Tulsa and Kansas, though, showing there is plenty of room for improvement. Herman has a veteran quarterback leading the way in Sam Ehlinger and with a few breaks along the way, who knows?

Texas Longhorns 2019 Season Preview
Herman is a winner and he’s steadily built the program after it was left in shambles by the Charlie Strong regime. In his first season in 2017, Herman led the Horns to a 7-6 record. Not great by Texas standards, but it was the first winning campaign in four seasons. Top-notch recruiting classes have created depth and competition at just about every position and Texas is primed for better results in 2019. The only question is will they get them.
While the team has improved so has the rest of the Big 12, and that Week 2 tilt with LSU is marked on everybody’s calendar. Texas impressed a lot of folks with its 48-45 win over OU in the Red River Rivalry, and the Horns beat a Georgia team that was deflated after missing out on its CFP chance. They won the games and that’s all that mattered.
The offense can be better, and it needs to make strides to keep up in the fast-paced world of the Big 12. The Horns averaged 411.6 yards and 31.1 points per game a season ago and will look to Ehlinger to improve those numbers. Ehlinger threw for 3,292 yards with 25 touchdowns while completing nearly 65 percent of his throws. He also took care of the football with just five picks.
Ideally Herman would like to see less running from his QB, but sometimes those things can’t be changed. Ehlinger accounted for 16 scores on the ground but was knocked out of a few games with his reckless play. Without an experienced backup losing Ehlinger could be a death blow. And the offense needs to handle the football while a defense that will feature as many as eight new starters gets comfortable early in the season.

As I’ve said countless times, there’s never been a two-loss team in the CFP. And for Texas to get in they’ll likely have to run the table. That’s a lot to ask for a team with plenty of newcomers and holes to fill in a conference that features Oklahoma. The Horns are going to be solid, but I don’t see them as CFP-worthy. They snuck up on the field last year and caught some breaks along the way, but going 11-1 or better through the regular season is a lot to ask.
The Horns lost four games last year but they were a play or two away from winning three of them. The Big 12 games that figure to be the most difficult are on the road, and if they make it to the conference championship they’ll face a team for the second time. There’s a good chance that team is Oklahoma.
