The Alabama Crimson Tide have been the best team in college football for years. Many even say they could beat lesser NFL teams. That’s how good the program has been under Nick Saban. It takes talent to consistently win in the SEC, the toughest football conference in America. And the Tide has plenty of talent. So much in fact, they are projected to have at least five players selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, which is scheduled to start on its original date of April 23.
The Tide was taken down by LSU last season. The Bayou Bengals had a season for the ages thanks to presumed No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow, going undefeated and winning the National Championship. The Tigers also have an abundance of NFL-ready talent and oddsmakers put their heads together to come up with a matchup prop for which one of the two squads has the most first-rounders. With the sporting world on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak, the draft gives fans a release along with a surplus of wagering options.
More 2020 NFL First Round Draft Picks
LSU got the better of Alabama on the gridiron last season, 46-41, behind 393 passing yards from Burrow. It was another in a season-long list of accomplishments that lifted the QB to the likely overall No. 1 pick. But the Tide has plenty of players who are ready to make the leap and they are the slight favorite to have more first-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.
The draft is not an exact science. Just look at all the mock drafts put together by the so-called experts and you’ll understand that in a hurry. I doubt you can find one that has the same picks. Add to that the specific needs of a team and the likelihood of a few trades and the entire event turns out completely different that what was expected.
One thing we definitely know is that these two squads were loaded last season. Despite the injury that curtailed his season, Tua Tagovailoa has shown enough to NFL teams that he’s ready for the next level. Tagovailoa, along with receivers Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs II, tackle Jedrick Wills and safety Xavier McKinney appear to be locked into the first round.
Trevon Diggs and Terrell Lewis are possible first-rounders who would go later if they are part of the first 32. All of these guys were destined to play at the next level. They were four or five star recruits out of high school and honed their skills with a program that churns out NFL players.
Every so often you see a team whose sum is better than its parts. That’s not the case with LSU. You don’t go undefeated in the SEC and win a National Championship without blue-chip players on both sides of the football.
For LSU it starts with Burrow, who put together a record-setting campaign in 2019. He got plenty of help from his favorite receiver Justin Jefferson, who caught 111 passes last season. For all their offensive exploits the Tigers could have more defenders selected in the first round pushing their total higher.

And depending on who you trust and listen to there’s a chance Patrick Queen gets selected. Most mock drafts have Delpit, Fulton and Jefferson in the bottom half of the first round and it appears as though the ceiling for LSU first-rounders is four. Again, we always see wacky things take place so I’m not locked into that number.
For the reasons mentioned above Alabama players are safe picks. They are highly regarded before going to Tuscaloosa and they really have to screw things up to ruin their draft stock. None of the players mentioned have done that. And given the lack of interaction teams have with players due to the coronavirus lockdown, safe is probably the way to go.
There could potentially be an insane 13 first-round picks between the two schools. Realistically the number will be lower and Alabama is listed as the favorite for a reason. It’s close, but Bama has one more shot at the first round than LSU does.
