Kiosk Sports Betting is Potentially Coming to Over a Thousand Locations in Ohio
There are some thousand plus bars and restaurants that have reportedly applied to offer sports betting kiosks in Ohio once wagering begins as early as January 2023.
In theory, individuals will be able to place bets at a kiosk while in the bar, restaurant and even bowling alleys. Likewise, there will be mobile apps available.
Despite the large number of applicants, regulators made it clear last week that there won’t be rubber-stamped for sports betting applicants in Ohio.
"Suitability standards" will have to be met, Ohio Casino Control Commission executive director Matt Schuler stated.
“And I say privilege of a license, because, in a lot of these conversations that I've been having, it seems that folks think if they submitted an application, they have the right to the license, without understanding the General Assembly had a lot to say about whether someone should have the privilege of a license,” Schuler said.
The kiosks will mostly be under the Ohio Lottery Commission’s purview while the “Type-C” licenses needed will come from the Ohio Casino Control Commission. Submissions for a January 1, 2023 start must be sent no later than August 15.
For a business to apply, it needs to be a currently licensed lottery retailer and have a D-1, D-2, or D-5 liquor permit.
27 businesses have already been approved to date after paying the $1000 licensing fee.
