NJ Regulators Order Bets on Purdue-LSU Game Halted

New Jersey regulators forced a stoppage on all bets between Purdue vs. LSU this past weekend as a result of Drew Brees' association with the online sportsbook PointsBet.

Brees had just accepted a gig with the Boilermakers as an interim coach on December 15, at which time PointsBet reportedly severed its partnership with the former New Orleans Saints quarterback.

Just two weeks prior, PointsBet came under fire for pushing an elaborate stunt that had Brees appearing to be struck by lightning while filming a video for the company.

The NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement not only orderd bets on Purdue be stopped but also forced a void on bets from December 15 forward.  The directive was apparently issued on Friday.

ESPN's David Payne Purdum tweeted out during halftime of that game.

"Imagine there are some surly bettors in New Jersey, who took LSU when line was around -9 and had their bets voided due to gaming enforcement decision. Tigers lead Purdue 35-0 at half."

Brees didn't just appear in commercials for PointsBet, he reportedly owned an equity stake in the Australian-based betting firm when he began as its ambassador back in June 2021.  PointsBet operates in a handful of U.S. states, including New Jersey.

Payne Purdum reports that the NJ regulators likely had an issue with the equity stake owned by Brees and still believed to be in unresolved.

Brees played for Purdue between 1997-2000.
