Horse Racing Coming to SC?
Wednesday's 56-46 vote in the South Carolina House to allow horse racing came as quite unexpected in a state that has long been unfriendly towards gambling.
Even many forms of charitable gambling is prohibited in the state. Prize raffles are allowed if the value of the prize doesn't exceed $500. The only forms of gambling allowed in the state are bingo, raffles, and a state lottery.
Rep. Russell Ott is a Democrat who in a majority Republican House did manage to get bipartisan votes for his sponsored bill, 56-46.
A similar bills has sat in the state's Senate for over a month now.
Up to three online companies could offer betting apps in South Carolina.
The state would get a minimum of 10% of the revenue from the betting.
No Betting on the Boston Marathon in Massachusetts
Massachusetts gambling regulators on Thursday denied a request to allow legal betting on this year's Boston Marathon, citing concerns by the race's organizers. All four members of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission who participated in the online meeting voted against the request by DraftKings.
Commission Chair Cathy Judd-Stein shared an email she received Wednesday from the Boston Athletic Association, which runs the marathon.
“At this moment, there is not sufficient time for the Boston Athletic Association, nor its many partners and agencies, to coordinate and fully ensure proper protocols are in place to support such a proposal for wagering on our event,” said Scott Stover, chief marketing officer for the BAA.
He added: “Until we can complete due diligence, our concerns include, but are not limited to, ensuring event security and potential influence on the outcome of the race.”
