The competition is fierce in the Men's 800M Freestyle competition at the Paris Summer Olympics this week.

Three qualifiers pay out between US$210 and US$220.

Northern Ireland's Wiffen won the 800 and 1500 metres freestyle at the 2024 world championships, the first time a male Irish swimmer had become world champion. Wiffen holds the 800 metres freestyle short-course world record with a time of 7:20.46.

Wiffen pays out $210 for every $100 bet.

"If I didn't come away with a medal I would be very disappointed. Going in with the times that I've produced, with my PBs (personal bests), they would just put me on the podium if I can replicate them.

"I've done it time and time again so we'll just keep doing what we are doing."

Short has represented Australia at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games. Short won a gold medal in the 1500m Freestyle and a silver in the 400m Freestyle at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, as well as a silver medal as part of the 4x200m Freestyle Relay at the 2022 World Championships.

Despite Short’s strong performances at last year’s world championships, he enters the Paris Olympics as an underdog after illness affected his performances at the recent trials in Brisbane, Kieran Pender of the Guardian writes. Short qualified second in the 400m and 800m events.

“I was battling a bit of illness in the week leading in,” Short says. “It’s definitely a good learning experience, to race not at the best health, but I still got the job done. I know come Olympic time, if everything goes right – which I’m doing everything in my power to make that happen – it will be a much easier ride and I’ll be able to enjoy the moment even more.

“I’m not going in ranked number one in the world,” he adds. “Going in a bit under the radar will definitely benefit me.”

He pays out $220 on a $100 bet, $10 more than Wiffen.

USA is represented by Robert Finke, who also promises a payout of $220 on a $100 bet.

Finke won two gold medals for the United States in the 2020 Summer Olympics: the men's 800-meter and 1500-meter freestyle swims.

“I didn’t even think about getting a gold until like the last 10 meters or so of the race,” Finke said of his Tokyo success.

“I was just amazed that he was there and doing what he was doing,” said Autumn, who watched the final with Summer and their parents in Florida. “I did not expect the last 50. He pretty much gave us all a heart attack.”
