Nevada Gambler Expected $40K on Winning bet, but Received $1K

Talk about a screw job.

A Las Vegas gambling patron who made a longshot bet on a golfer in the 2023 Australian Open is trying to convince regulators that he should be paid his $40,200 winnings after the sportsbook accepted his bet, but said it made an error when posting odds.

The odds were offered at 20,000:1 with the bet placed at $200 on Nov. 22 for Spanish golfer Joel Moscatel Nachshon to win the first round of the 2023 Fortinet Australian PGA Championship at the Royal Queensland Golf Club in Australia.

Moscatel, currently 281st in world golf rankings, finished the tournament in seventh place with an 11-under-par score, but was first after the first round, tying the course record by shooting a 63.

The win earned the gambler $40,200, according to bet sheets he kept from his digital account with William Hill Sportsbook.

To date, he says he has only received $1000 of the winnings and is still fighting to get paid.

Barkley Attracts More Bets Than Some NFL Teams

At sportsbooks across the nation, Saquon Barkley's anytime touchdown (-175) was easily the most popular player prop of Sunday, attracting more bets and handle than any other prop at ESPN BET, BetMGM or DraftKings, according to David Purdum of ESPN.

Barkley cashed the prop about halfway through the second quarter on a 3-yard run en route to 176 rushing yards during the Eagles' 28-3 dismantling of the Giants. Philadelphia easily covered -3, which was also among the most popular spread bets Sunday.

Bet tracking tool Pikkit, which aggregates betting data across sportsbooks, says that the 32,150 Barkley ATD bets it tracked were more than any individual team on the moneyline. The company also reports that it saw more than four times as many wagers as the next most bet-on player to score a touchdown (A.J. Brown).

UK Gambling Commission Ramps Efforts to Combat Black Market

According to CEO Andrew Rhodes, tackling the black market is a top priority for the Commission, with the regulator dedicating significant resources and expertise to the effort.

The controversial affordability checks, in particular, is likely to prove a boon to illegal operators.

The Gambling Commission CEO said: “The Illegal market is bad from a human point of view – as it poses a risk to consumers, especially the vulnerable. It is also unlikely to operate in a way that is fair or safe. It is also a concern from an economic point of view – as it pays no tax and undercuts legitimate business.”

The Commission’s multi-pronged approach leverages data analytics, enhanced partnerships, and consumer research to identify and shut down illegal gambling websites.

Some 750 cease and desist letters have been issued in the past year alone.

Some 50,000 URLs were removed from search engine results, a tenfold increase compared to the previous 12-month period.

Looking ahead, the Commission intends to expand its partnerships beyond Google, establishing a working relationship with Microsoft to replicate the successful URL referral process across Bing, Yahoo Finance, and other Microsoft-powered search engin
