Can I Play Chumba Casino From Connecticut?
Chumba Casino is restricted in the great state of Connecticut.
Real money online casinos are accessible in many cases, though not regulated by the state.
Of course Connecticut is home to Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard and Mohegan Sun in Uncasville. Both are quite nice.
Connecticut Sweepstakes Law
Under state law, there may not be conditions or restrictions placed on a person who wins the sweepstakes. It is illegal to require the winner to buy anything or pay a fee of any type.
The only exception is that the winner may be required to complete publicity or liability releases or eligibility affidavits and assume liability for city, federal, state, or local taxes, and pay federal, state or local license or registration fees or other similar costs.
Anyone advertising a sweepstakes in Connecticut must disclose in immediate proximity to and in at least the same size and type face as the descriptions of each prize in the advertisements:
- The verifiable retail value of such prizes;
- The element of chance involved;
- The odds of winning such prize; and,
- Whether the receipt of the prize is restricted or qualified in any way.
Chumba Casino Shuts Down
Virtual Gaming Worlds (VGW), parent company of Chumba, stopped operating in Connecticut after complying with a cease-and-desist letter sent by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) in February of this past year.
In the letter, the DCP accused VGW of conducting unlicensed sweepstakes gambling in violation of state law and fair trade practices.
Australian-based VGW is the largest operator of U.S. sweepstakes casinos with brands that include Chumba Casino, Luckyland Slots and Global Poker in several U.S. states. Research conducted by Eilers & Krejcik suggests that VGW holds approximately 50% market share for its online sweepstake products. Back in 2020, VGW owned around 90% of the sweepstakes casino market.
