A former employee of Ken "The Shrink" Weitzner says the controversial gambling news website owner who died last week was an "obsessed" man whose desire to dominate a rival fueled his success.

Buzz Daly, a noted writer who covers the domestic and offshore gambling industries, wrote articles about sports wagering for one of Weitzner's websites.

Daly was unaware of Weitzner's death when contacted at his suburban Las Vegas home Tuesday by Gambling911.com and asked for reaction.

After regaining his composure, Daly told Gambling911.com: "I have known Ken since the very early days of offshore sports betting. He was obsessed with superseding Bettor's World (www.bettorsworld.com), which was one of the first dominant websites to cover the burgeoning industry."

Daly continued: "The Internet was super-competitive and Ken took to it like a duck to water. During that period, by his own admission, Ken was frequently under the influence of booze and drugs, although he worked very hard at making his website into a leader.

"Knowing him and what made him tick, if the reports of a double suicide with his wife are true, it is shocking, but not totally surprising. Ken was pragmatic, and if he made the decision to end it all, I believe he had good enough reason so that I would not second-guess him.

"He had carved out a different life since he had sold The Prescription (www.rx.com) and was trying to be a better person. I think he was succeeding. I worked for him as a contributor to his new web site Eye on Gambling (www.eog.com) for the first year. Ken was a work in progress and he always had his inner demons to contend with."

Daly, who now runs his own gambling-themed website at www.buzzdaly.com, concluded his thoughts to Gambling911.com with what seemed like a Las Vegas version of the Lord's Prayer.

"I hope he finds peace and is in a better place," Daly said. "Although I feel for the heavenly bookmakers who will take his action and all the winged craps shooters he will annoy with his beloved wrong-way action. God speed, Ken."
