With Super Saver and Lookin at Lucky not making an appearance, the Belmont Stakes 2010 contenders encompass nearly the entire field.  The biggest long shot, in fact, is Dave in Dixie at +2500 odds.

There are three contenders vying for the favorite status:  Fly Down at +450 odds, First Dude at +450 odds and Ice Box at +480 odds.  Each would pay out between $40 and $50 for every $10 bet or $400 to $500 for every $100 bet.

Rather than detract from the race, the withdrawal of Super Saver and Lookin At Lucky has set the stage for a showdown between some of the best three-year-olds in the country, the Reuters news agency reports.

Ice Box, one of the early Triple Crown favorites, endured an unfortunate situation while contending in last month's Kentucky Derby.  Ice Box got boxed in during that race and bypassed the Preakness and was prepared specifically for the Belmont

Ice Box's biggest rival appears to be 7-2 chance First Dude, named after the husband of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

First Dude is certainly a major contender to win the Belmont Stakes 2010.  He finished second in the Preakness after setting a blistering early pace.

"It's a stamina race because you've got to be able to make the mile and a half," First Dude's trainer Dale Romans said.

"You don't have to get as lucky as you do in the Derby. The best horse is going to win, the horse that's best prepared.

"You look at the history of this race, it's been great trainers that won it."

The 2010 Belmont Stakes will not be without its own storylines and sentimental favorites.

Uptowncharlybrown, who recently changed stables after his trainer Alan Seewald died in April, was listed with +1600 odds for a payout potential of $16 on every $10 bet.  Make Music for Me (+1000 odds), trained by Alexis Barba, can become the first female trainer to saddle a Triple Crown winner.  Technically he is within the single odds range making him one of the more overlooked Belmont Stakes contenders.
