The so-called Craigslist Killer has committed suicide in a Massachusetts jail.

Philip Markoff, 24,pleaded not guilty in the fatal shooting of Julissa Brisman, of New York City, and the armed robbery of a Las Vegas woman, both at Boston hotels.

Prosecutors claim Markoff, former Boston University medical student, lured Brisman to the Marriott Copley Place hotel in Boston on April 14, 2009 after she advertised in the "exotic services" section on Craigslist.

Markoff is accused of binding Brisman during a violent struggle then shooting her in the chest.

As reported by Gambling911.com following his arrest, Markoff may have owed significant gambling debts.

His motive was to rob his victims in order to pay off gambling debts, authorities said.

Law enforcement sources did not detail how much money Markoff owed.

Markoff was scheduled to stand trial in March 2011.
