One of Europe’s largest online gambling firms, Sportingbet, has settled with the US Government, agreeing to forfeit $33 million.

Sportingbet was represented by the successful Barry and Stuart Slotnick father and son tandem, who managed to get a settlement much less than what was originally anticipated. Barry Slotnick is perhaps best known for his obtaining an acquittal of New York City resident Bernard Goetz on attempted murder and assault charges related to his shooting of four would-be muggers on a subway train in 1984.

As part of the settlement agreement, US authorities have agreed not to prosecute officers of Sportingbet for accepting bets from US citizens prior to passage of the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

"This was a very prolonged and tough negotiation with the US Department of Justice and we are very satisfied with the outcome," Stuart Slotnick said in an interview with Gambling911.com Monday evening.

This story is still developing.
