NJ Bill Would Require Online Gambling Processors to Get 'Stricter' License

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey — (Associated Press) - New Jersey wants to subject companies that handle Internet gambling deposits and payments to stricter licensing requirements, in the hope it will make banks more willing to allow the use of credit cards to fund online betting accounts.

The reluctance of banks to allow credit card use to fund accounts is one of the main things holding back the growth of New Jersey's new Internet gambling industry.

75 Percent of Visa Credit Cards Not Working for NJ Online Gambling Sites

New Jersey online gambling companies are seeing around a 75% decline in credit cards, according to Matthew Katz of CEO of CAMS.

He recently spoke to Rebecca Liggero of CalvinAyre.com regarding the current climate in New Jersey when it comes to payment processing.

“I think the biggest challenge is just education, getting the bankers to understand how significant the technology and the processes all the regulators have in place to be compliant,” Katz said.

Bill to Allow NJ Licensing of Foreign Internet Gambling Firms One Step Closer

(Associated Press) - A plan to let New Jersey casino regulators oversee foreign Internet gambling companies if they move their operations to Atlantic City has moved a step closer to approval.

A state senate wagering committee approved the bill Monday.

The measure is sponsored by Sen. Raymond Lesniak. He says many overseas gambling companies want the stamp of approval that would come from submitting to New Jersey's casino regulators, who are among the strictest in the nation.

The foreign firms wouldn't be able to take bets from anyone in the United States.

Internet Gambling Growth Slows in New Jersey

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (Associated Press) — The growth of New Jersey's Internet gambling market slowed somewhat in its third full month of operation, with the Atlantic City gambling websites posting a nearly 9 percent revenue increase in February.

The 16 online gambling sites had posted a 28 percent gain in January, to $9.5 million. In February, the online sites won $10.3 million.

Neteller Returns to the US: Shares Surge Nearly 3 Percent

Lindsey Graham Set to Introduce Bill Banning All Forms of Online Gambling

South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham is on the cusp of introducing a bill that would strengthen the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA) of 2006 and fully ban all forms of online gambling including poker.

While UIGEA essentially does just that, the US Justice Department interpretation of the law opened the door for state-by-state legislation.  Graham wants no part of it.

Kentucky Court Overturns Seizures of Online Gambling Domain Names

A Kentucky Appeals court ruled Friday (February 21, 2014) that the state cannot seize 132 online gambling domain names.  The court determined that a trade organization, the Interactive Gaming Council, can step into the 6-year-old case and represent operators of named websites.   An earlier ruling declared that trade organizations such as IGC and the now defunct Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association (iMEGA) lacked standing.

Federal Bill Outlawing All Online Gambling Except Poker to be Introduced in March

U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-Nevada) said he anticipates new federal legislation banning all forms of online gambling except poker to be introduced in the coming months.  Such a measure would ban Internet sports betting and online casinos, the later of which are currently permitted in the state of New Jersey.

Heller and others in Congress have attempted to pass similar legislation in recent years without any success.

Breakup of Bwin.Party Possible With Activist Fund Taking Stake in Company

The Financial Times of London is reporting that a New York-based activist hedge fund will be taking a stake in struggling Bwin.Party

SpringOwl, which is managed by the activist fund Cumberland Associates, has “agreed in principle” to purchase around 6.1 per cent of Bwin.Party from the group’s founders, Ruth Parasol and Russ Deleon.

As part of the deal, SpringOwl will have the right to appoint one director to the board.
