Sports Betting in California
In May 2018, the US Supreme Court struck down a federal law that prohibited gambling on sports. A number of states have since looked to capitalize by amending their own laws. California is not one of them.
Assemblyman Adam Gray introduced a constitutional amendment allowing sports betting in California back in 2017. This measure failed to make it to the assembly committee for a second straight year. It would require two-thirds approval by the state Assembly and Senate, plus approval by Gov. Jerry Brown before it can go on a ballot.
The new legislative session does not begin until the start of 2019. The odds of anything getting done prior to the NBA Playoffs are virtually zero.
