Duhamel Wouldn’t Have Been Sitting Duck in USA
In a tongue-in-cheek essay earlier this month about New Year's resolutions we'd like to see from poker players, Gambling911.com joked that 2010 WSOP Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel, who was recently beaten and robbed in a home invasion, should resolve to buy a home security system and some guns.
In all reality, however, Duhamel, who lives in suburban Montreal, really can't buy a handgun to protect himself or his home, because under strict Canadian anti-gun laws, it's almost impossible for a private Canadian citizen to legally get a handgun!
And that may have led to the severe beating that Duhamel suffered last month when two thugs broke into his house and robbed him of cash and valuables, including his WSOP championship gold bracelet--the intruders knew Duhamel likely woudn't be armed and couldn't shoot them.
That's not to say that if Duhamel lived in the United States he wouldn't have been beaten and robbed.
Such home invasions occur all the time in the U.S.
But any burglars thinking of doing so to an American home always have to worry that the residents may be armed, and that deters many a robbery.
And if said home invaders still decide to break into someone's dwelling, and the residents are armed, there's a very good chance the invaders will be shot--and maybe even killed.
When the U.S. Justice Dept. cracked down on online poker last year and busted several large online poker rooms, it became increasingly difficult for online poker players in the U.S. to find online rooms that would let them play.
In light of that, many top American online players moved to Canada so they could continue to play poker online.
In Duhamel's case, though, it's the opposite.
Here's a top Canadian poker player who should consider moving to the U.S., where he can legally buy a gun and protect himself and his poker earnings.
