UK regulators may require online poker operators to ring fence funds in light of the April 2011 debacles involving Full Tilt Poker and UB.com, not to mention a handful of European-based Web poker rooms that have gone under since.

From LegalPokerSites.com:

The Department of Culture, Media, and Sports had asked the UK Gambling Commission to investigate whether or not ring fencing of funds would help to protect the players but that suggestion was met with opposition as the (UK Gaming Commission) UKGC felt that it would be too much of a burden on online operators.

The UKGC appears to have had a change of heart, issuing the following statement more recently:

“The Gambling Commission will be consulting on the appropriate measures that can be required of operators to protect customer funds against fraud or insolvency.”
