State Sen. Ray Lesniak (D-Elizabeth) sent out an email blast today declaring victory in his standoff with Harrah's.

Treacherous Midterm for Democrats Says The Hill

The Hill.com is not optimistic in regard to Democrats holding onto their majority seats after this November’s midterm elections and this does not bode well for online poker supporters who are counting on the Democratic Chairman of the House Financial Committee Barney Frank to come through for them with legislation designed to license Web card rooms in the States.

Ironically it is the online oddsmakers who are predicting the sweep by Republicans.

One of Europe’s largest online gambling firms, Sportingbet, has settled with the US Government, agreeing to forfeit $33 million.

Sportingbet was represented by the successful Barry and Stuart Slotnick father and son tandem, who managed to get a settlement much less than what was originally anticipated.  Barry Slotnick is perhaps best known for his obtaining an acquittal of New York City resident Bernard Goetz on attempted murder and assault charges related to his shooting of four would-be muggers on a subway train in 1984.

Just yesterday we reported on how the primary legislator for online poker lobbyists in California, Roderick Wright, had been indicted on 8 charges including voter fraud.  He is also the scheduled key note speaker for the European iGaming Congress and Expo to be held in Barcelona, Spain next month.  Good grief.

Online Gambling In The US: Ladbrokes, William Hill Likely To Lose Out

With the very real possibility that Congressman Barney Frank could lose his chairmanship position should the Republicans take over the House come November, online poker federal legislation must pass prior to Election Day or else there will likely be no “start over” time come 2011.  Ladbrokes, William Hill and other European sports betting ventures itching to get into the U.S. market still may be blocked since Frank’s legislation pertains only to online poker.
