Just how much money would be won if Chet Edwards were to be selected Barack Obama's running mate? Chet Edwards Vice President odds were not readily available at most online gambling sites leading into Friday evening.

The rarely-mentioned Edwards is on Obama's short list, Democratic officials say.

Democratic officials told the Huffington Post that little-known Texas Rep. Chet Edwards was one of the few Democrats whose background was checked by Obama's campaign and he was a finalist for the job.

Edwards is a favorite of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who praised his "extraordinary credentials" on ABC's "This Week" on Aug. 3 and said: "I hope he will be the nominee."

Edwards declined to answer other questions about his chances, but said he has been vetted. "I can say that, yes, I have been considered by the Obama campaign," he said, "but there is only one person who's going to make this decision. And that's Senator Obama and I want to respect that fact."

In the end, experience and change - both of which Edwards can help bring to the White House - may not be as important as winning texas.

Edwards contends Obama could make Texas competitive. "It's going to be surprising to people how competitive Texas will be with Obama at the top of the ticket," he said.

Bookmaker.com has been offering betting on the 2008 US Presidential race with updated odds to come after this weekend. That website acknowledged this week that heavy action was coming in on McCain and they even took a $20,000 bet on the Republicans to win the White House this year while we were visiting their office.
