A stalker as it pertains to horse racing is one that runs just behind the leaders.

Is this a good thing when it comes to the Kentucky Derby?

For sure it is.  In fact, stalkers tend to be looked upon more favorably than horses known for their closing ability.  That’s because, unlike closers, stalkers keep pace and do not necessarily need an extra boost of speed.

A great example of a stalker was Alydar in 1978.  He had the misfortune of racing in the Kentucky Derby the same year as Triple Crown winner Affirmed.  Nevertheless, he finished a close second to Affirmed that year.

Of this year’s stalkers, Danza had the shortest odds at 10-1.
