Who Are The 2014 Top Kentucky Derby Contenders?

California Chrome is the odds-on favorite and there is little negative we have to say about him other than there could be stronger contenders.

Vicar's in Trouble may have excelled in the Louisiana Derby but he drew the dreaded number one post position.  That might be enough to keep the action away but in reality, horses running from this position have finished better than their odds suggested over the past decade with only one exception.  At 25-1 odds, there is very good value.

Wildcat Red is a hot Kentucky Derby contender at 15-1 odds considering his excellent post position.  This horse has never been worse than 2^nd in all seven of his lifetime starts.  His speed is amazing but the question remains, can he maintain that speed the entire length of the Kentucky Derby.

Dance With Fate at 20-1 odds enjoyed an incredible finish in the Blue Grass and he’s a distance horse that has the potential to thrive in the Derby.   The only problem, he prefers the synthetic surface to dirt, at least based on previous race history.

Danza is another of the perceived top Kentucky Derby contender whose odds are likely to be slashed further as we approach race time (hint: lock the price in here now) This entry won the Arkansas Derby and viewed as being able to run the distance.  Is late finish there is perfectly suited to the Kentucky Derby.  The problem with Danza is he doesn’t have a whole lot of races under his belt.

Chitu at 20-1 odds has yet to run a bad race.  He’s speedy and peaking at just the right time to make him an ideal Kentucky Derby contender at attractive odds.

Tapiture has some terrific value at 12-1 and has shown he loves Churchill Downs.

Speed and distance may not be his forty as he's never earned a triple-digit Speed rating.

General A Rod is getting plenty of accolades coming into this race and viewed as a true Kentucky Derby contender.  At 15-1 odds, he’s got great value too.

Distance loving and being ridden by Joel Rosario, last year's winning jockey on Orb, there are reasons to love this entry.  Pundits do note that General A Rod did come up a little short when utilizing stalking tactics in the Florida Derby.  Still, he hasn’t run a bad race yet.

Vinceros at long 55-1 odds has never finished worse than second following one poor performance on Polytrack.  His speed is questionable and, hence the reason for the 55-1 odds, but the payout is substantial for a horse that stands a chance.
