Responding to reports that he had won $100k while playing poker at the Wynn Hotel and Casino this past weekend, Olympic multi-gold medal winner Michael Phelps shot down the story, first reported by TMZ.com.
He tweeted: "I wish I won a 100k.... Haha not true tho.”
His friends have told media outlets they were about Phelps squandering his millions playing poker, a game the now retired Olympian swimmer admits to have fallen in love with.
First it was US Olympic medal winning swimmer Ryan Lochte romping naked in Vegas with Prince Harry, now comes word that fellow Olympian (now retired) Michael Phelps just won a huge $100k pot in Sin City playing poker.
The win was reported by TMZ.com and occurred at Caesar’s Palace.
After a long and unnecessary ordeal, the grandmother of Great Britain Olympian bronze medal gymnast Sam Oldham finally has cash in hand for the entire €1000 owed to her by bookmaker BetFred.
You might recall that BetFred initially refused to pay Linda Aldred, 66, her £1000 winnings on a £5 bet that her grandson Sam would win an Olympic medal. BetFred claimed the bet was on an individual medal and that the team, not Sam specifically, won the bronze. Great Britain won its first Olympic medal in 100 years.
BetFred finally paid British Olympian gymnast Sam Oldham’s grandma. Too bad the check was no good!
Perhaps it was just an honest mistake but Linda Aldred tells Gambling911.com BetFred sent her and Sis two separate checks, neither of which were signed.
“BetFred say they send out plenty of cheques (so) it is no unusual for an odd one to go unsigned,” Ms. Aldred said. “Strange that two in the same dispute happen not to have been signed.”
BetFred advised Gambling911.com late Thursday it had decided to pay out on an Olympic bet placed by the grandmother of Olympic gymnast Sam Oldham, ending a brief - albeit ugly - chapter in the company’s history.
Late Thursday, British bookmaker BetFred, run by multi-millionaire Fred Done, refused to budge in regard to paying the grandmother of Olympic swimmer Sam Oldham. Many across the nation – and the world for that matter – have taken to Twitter to voice their outrage and hopefully pressure BetFred into doing what they believe to be the right thing.
The headlines these past 24 hours have been jarring.
From the Daily Express: I’ve Won 200-1 Bet on My Grandson at Olympics….But Bookies Won’t Pay Up
From the San Francisco Chronicle: British Bookmakers Won’t Pay Out Grandmother’s Winning Bet
British bookmaker BetFred.com has refused to pay out on a 200/1 bet placed by Olympian San Oldham’s grandmother that he would win a medal at this year’s London Olympics. Oldham ended up winning a gymnastic team bronze medal representing Great Britain. The win was considered a major upset and the first in gymnastics for England in 100 years.
Friends of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps claim the record gold medal winner “only thinks about gambling” these days, more specifically about playing poker.

With one of the greatest poker players to ever live, Phil Hellmuth, gushing all over one of the greatest Olympians who has ever lived, Michael Phelps, it’s no wonder the rumor mill is alive with talk that Phelps is preparing to embark on a professional poker career.
