Canada May Pass Single Sports Betting Bill This Week: Leagues Not Happy

Canada is looking to pass a bill that would allow for betting on single sports events this week.  But it now appears a significant obstacle is standing in the way.

While the House of Commons approved the bill unanimously, the professional sports industry is pressuring the Senate to defeat the measure.

Powerball Jackpot Reaches $425 Million With No Winner Saturday

DES MOINES, Iowa (Associated Press) — Lottery officials say nobody has won the Powerball jackpot and the top prize will now increase to about $425 million for the next drawing, the largest jackpot ever for the game.

Iowa Lottery spokeswoman Mary Neubauer said sales were strong over the holiday week for Saturday's drawing, which was estimated at $325 million before the numbers were picked. That was the fourth-largest jackpot in the game's history.

ANZPT Auckland 2012 Final Table Determined

The ANZPT Auckland 2012 Final Table is now set with Geoff Smith of Christchurch, New Zealand leading the way.  The 39-year-old has been playing poker now for the past 6 years after first seeing televised games.

NFL Network Pulling ‘Rich Eisen Thanksgiving Special’ Called 'Censorship'

Claiming it wants no association with Gambling, the NFL Network abruptly pulled the Harvey Weinstein produced “Rich Eisen Thanksgiving Special” just hours before the scheduled airing.

Brock Parker Wins 2012 Borgata Fall Poker Open

Brock Parker has won the 2012 Borgata Fall Poker Open and the $372k cash prize that comes with that honor.

A total of 644 poker players entered the event.

“It was a really good final table,” Parker told the Borgata blog after the event. “A lot of talented players.”

Parker’s life time earnings of just over $1.8 million include two first place finishes at the 2009 World Series of Poker that totaled nearly $800,000.  He won two WSOP bracelets as a result.  Parker has cashed out in 44 events to date.

South Carolina High Court Rules Organized Poker Games Illegal

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Associated Press) - South Carolina's high court says that organized poker games are illegal, even when they happen in a private home.

The state Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that state law prohibits wagering on Texas Hold 'Em, even though it's a game of skill.

During a raid on a home near Charleston in 2006, police seized several thousand dollars in cash and a small amount of marijuana, ticketing about 25 people for illegal gambling.

Greece Gambling Monopoly Hurt by Recession

ATHENS (Reuters) – Greece’s OPAP, one of Europe's biggest betting firms, reported a 16 percent fall in third-quarter profit on Tuesday, weighed down by the recession in its Greek home market.

Cash-strapped Greece’s plans next year to sell almost its entire 34 percent stake in OPAP, its most profitable company, as part of its international bailout agreement. But higher taxes and doubts about OPAP's most precious asset, its gambling monopoly, may undermine the company's value.

Alabama Developer Ronnie Gilley Begins Jail Time After Vote Buying Trial

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Associated Press) — Country Crossing casino developer Ronnie Gilley has reported to the federal penitentiary in Atlanta to begin serving a sentence of six years and eight months for offering bribes to legislators to support pro-gambling legislation.

He was originally scheduled to report Aug. 27. He has received delays to allow him to pay for unspecified surgery and recovery rather than having the federal Bureau of Prisons pay for it.

Federal prisons spokeswoman Traci Billingsley said Gilley reported to the Atlanta prison Monday afternoon as scheduled.

3G Studios Invests $20 million in Online Gambling (Video)

James Kosta, CEO of Reno, Nevada based 3G Studio, revealed on Fox Business this past week that his company has invested $20 million in online gambling as it prepares for legalization either on the federal or state front.
