Online Gambling Group Sportingbet Settles With US Government for $33 Mil

One of Europe’s largest online gambling firms, Sportingbet, has settled with the US Government, agreeing to forfeit $33 million.

Sportingbet was represented by the successful Barry and Stuart Slotnick father and son tandem, who managed to get a settlement much less than what was originally anticipated.  Barry Slotnick is perhaps best known for his obtaining an acquittal of New York City resident Bernard Goetz on attempted murder and assault charges related to his shooting of four would-be muggers on a subway train in 1984.

Online Gambling In The US: Ladbrokes, William Hill Likely To Lose Out

With the very real possibility that Congressman Barney Frank could lose his chairmanship position should the Republicans take over the House come November, online poker federal legislation must pass prior to Election Day or else there will likely be no “start over” time come 2011.  Ladbrokes, William Hill and other European sports betting ventures itching to get into the U.S. market still may be blocked since Frank’s legislation pertains only to online poker.
