DraftKings Surcharge Still Going Through

Over the last week everybody connected to sports betting has been talking about the proposed DraftKings surcharge for four U.S. states (hint: that number will most certainly increase over time if folks in these states tolerate it).  None of the comments have been positive.

DraftKings CEO Jason Robins announced Aug. 1 that, starting next year, the sportsbook giant, which doesn't operate in Nevada, will deduct a 3.2 percent gaming tax surcharge from winning wagers in Illinois, which recently raised taxes on sports betting from 15 percent to 40 percent.

Advisor Keith McDonald put it best:

"Further fuel for the offshore market …..with regulated market set to become (remain) biggest super affiliate for the offshore guys - educate players and then they figure out they get WAY better value (odds / bonuses) offshore and don’t mind waiting an extra day or two for payments.

"Such a dumb micro move by the regulated market tax authorities, and subsequently the operators, that shows a complete lack of understanding for the bigger picture."

California Bookie Tied to Ohtani Interpreter to Serve 30 to 37 Months

A Southern California bookmaker whose customers included the interpreter for MLB super star Shohei Ohtani has pleaded guilty to running an illegal gambling business and is expected to serve anywhere from between 30 and 37 months behind bars.

Mathew Bowyer, 49, entered the plea in federal court in Santa Ana. He also pleaded guilty to money laundering and subscribing to a false tax return. He's due to be sentenced Feb. 7.

“I was running an illegal gambling operation, laundering money through other people’s bank accounts,” Bowyer told the judge.

Bowyer reportedly ran his bookie business out of both Southern California and Las Vegas.

How to Be a Baseball Bookie

Just think about it, on average there are 162 regular MLB game per season. If a gambler bets $100 on one team per season with a 10% vig, you can earn $1,620 from them. Multiply that by the number of friends you have that follow baseball and it can become quite high.
