Sidney’s Candy

Sidney's Candy was a mere half point off from being the 2010 Kentucky Derby favorite, a position currently occupied by Lookin At Lucky.  Sidney's Candy odds were listed at +400 at BetUS.com Wednesday afternoon.

Sidney's Candy won the first Grade I of his career when he wired the field in the 2010 Santa Anita Derby, winning by four and a half lengths under jockey Joe Talamo. It was the first Santa Anita Derby victory for Talamo and Southern California-based trainer John W. Sadler.  He will race from the number 20 spot.

Gambling911.com observes that only two horses have won in the number 20 position since 1900, odds that statistically make Sidney's Candy a pretty big long shot, yet his odds were slashed from +500 or 5/1 previously.

Trainer John Sadler emphasized to the Thoroughbred Times on Wednesday that Sidney's Candy, a homebred for Jenny Craig and her late husband Sid, is "a relaxed horse who happens to have secured his victories in front-running style".

"Look at this picture," Sadler said with a smile as he pulled out a BlackBerry mobile phone. The photo, sent by assistant Larry Benavides, showed Sidney's Candy sleeping in straw at Churchill Downs on the day he arrived at the Louisville track. "Look at the date of the photo. That's from April 14. You just don't see that."

At 4/1 or +400 odds, Sidney's Candy would pay out $40 for every $10 bet at BetUS.com.
