Adelson Hates Pot Almost as Much as He Hates Online Gambling

Amendment 2 as part of Tuesday’s midterm elections in the state of Florida would legalize marijuana in the Sunshine State.

For those of you who live here as we do, you might have noticed that campaign ads asking Florida residents to vote NO for Amendment 2 were about the third most plentiful after campaign ads for both Gubernatorial candidates Rick Scott and Charlie Crist.

Someone or some organization with a lot of money doesn’t want the great citizens of Florida smoking pot for medicinal purposes.  That someone it turns out is none other than casino magnate Sheldon Adelson.

This is the same Adelson who has waged a campaign against online gambling.  Some $3.9 million has been spent by opponents of the measure, much of the financing from Adelson.

Florida is the only state in which pot is on the ballot this year.  The amendment needs 60% to pass and while many polls show strong support and, in an ironic twist, Adelson's ad campaign could be what pushes that vote over the magic number.

The ad in question actually touts just how easy it will be to get marijuana, something that is music to the ears of many a Floridian who might otherwise have ignored the amendment.
