One of the most trafficked stories ever appearing on the Gambling911.com website was one leading up to the 2008 U.S. presidential race. It involved Paddy Power's controversial (and some would say sick) odds on then candidate Barack Obama being assassinated. The Irish betting firm was forced to remove said odds and we've not seen similar since.
In the wake of former U.S. President Donald Trump's attempted assassination Saturday, there have been a number of unique betting markets opening.
BetOnline was quick to pull Trump's election odds immediately following the shooting. One of the sad realities was the likely influx of money on current U.S. President Joe Biden as we could have been looking at a more tragic outcome involving the GOP candidate.
Trump would eventually post on his Truth Social platform that his ear had been grazed by a bullet, BetOnline opened the elections odds once again. The former president's number moved from -180 all the way up to -300. That's where they currently sit Sunday morning.
Polymarket has seen a number of new betting markets emerge since the attempt on Trump's life.
One such betting market asked whether the suspect would be a registered Republican or Democrat. Nearly $10,000 in bets were made on this market with 75% backing the shooting suspect being a registered Republican. Turns out they were wrong.
The shooting suspect has since been identified as one Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, a 20-year-old registered Republican.
The gunman was immediately “neutralized” by the Secret Service, chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi said.
Crooks used a semi-automatic rifle and was seen aiming it by rally attendees, who insisted they attempted to warn Secret Service agents present.
Bethel Park is described by CNBC as "a predominantly white, relatively well-to-do city in the southern reaches of greater Pittsburgh". The site of the rally, Butler, is about an hour’s drive north of Pittsburgh.
Some of the betting markets that emerged at Polymarket immediately following the incident included whether the suspect would be identified prior to Saturday night (he was officially identified after midnight Eastern Standard Time) though the New York Post identified him over an hour prior.
By Sunday morning we had betting markets on whether Kimberly Cheatle would be out as Director of Secret Service (45% chance to 15% chance), whether Trump's ear would be bandaged during the upcoming week's Republican convention in Milwaukee (78% chance) and if Trump was wearing a bullet proof vest at the time of the shooting.
Polymarket's outcomes are clearly spelled out on their site. The bullet proof vest market, for example, will be resolved to "Yes" if it is "confirmed Trump was wearing a bulletproof vest during his rally". Typically Polymarket includes a specific confirmation source, though they do not here.
The bandaged ear betting market resolution is pretty straightforward.
"(It) will be based on photo or video evidence from Donald Trump at the event (the Republican convention)."
BetOnline is anticipated to have a number of prop bets involving this week's Republican convention. Polymarket, we should note, does not accept bets from those in the United States. BetOnline does.
