Stateside Bookies, Costa Rica Business Indicted

A federal indictment unsealed today charged four men and two companies with running an illegal gambling business that attracted about $3.6 million in bets over three years.

Gerlarmo Cammisano, 56, James J. Moretina, 60, James L. Dicapo, 57, and Michael J. Lombardo, 54, each were charged with violations of federal gambling laws in the 23-count indictment returned Tuesday in Kansas City.

Iowa House Takes up Online Sports Gambling

The Sioux City Journal reports that Iowans could legally play online poker against their neighbors and bet on sports events under a proposal by Iowa House members.

The plan, which may get a hearing in the House State Government Committee next week, may expand sports betting language approved by a Senate committee to include legalized betting on collegiate sports - except Iowa colleges, according to Rep. Brian Quirk, D-New Hampton, who is part of a seven- member bipartisan gambling working group.

NJ Panel to Consider Law on Sports Betting

TRENTON -- Legislation that would allow New Jersey's horse racing tracks and Atlantic City casinos to accept wagers on sporting events will go before an Assembly panel this week.

It would allow gamblers to make bets in person or via telephone or the Internet, though wagers would not be allowed on college games that take place in the Garden State or involve a New Jersey college team, regardless of where the game was played.

But before any such law could be enacted, voters would first have to amend the state Constitution to permit such wagering.
