Kentucky Governor to Push for Casino Gambling in Commonwealth Again Next Session

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Associated Press) — Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear said Wednesday he appointed his chief Republican rival in the Legislature to a judicial post because he was the best qualified applicant for the job, not because getting him out of the way would improve the chances of legalizing casino gambling in the state.

Beshear, in his first public comments since appointing Senate President Davis Williams circuit judge in southern Kentucky, said he had a responsibility to pick the best person for the job.

Atlantic City Casinos May Reopen Friday Morning Following Sandy’s Wrath

(Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy has silenced the thousands of slot machines and high-rollers who normally crowd the black jack and roulette tables of Atlantic City, but the resort's casino companies wager they could be back in business within days.

The storm that swept up the East Coast of the United States on Monday made landfall near Atlantic City, ripping up several blocks of its famous boardwalk and tearing roofing off casinos and hotels.

French Euromillions Site Taken Down by Hackers, Defaced: Verses From Koran Cited

The French Euromillions site was hacked and defaced with notations suggesting its “sinful” nature.

From the Register:

A group identifying itself as the “Moroccanghosts” hacking crew posted messages decrying the lottery as the work of the devil in both French and Arabic after breaking into the euromillions.fr website.

A verse from the Koran was also cited throughout.

Alderney to Investigate PinnacleSports.com

The online gambling licensing jurisdiction of Alderney does not want to take any chances following last summer’s debacle with Full Tilt Poker.  On Monday it was announced they will now commence an intensive investigation into PinnacleSports.com. 

Pinnacle has been implicated by US authorities for its alleged role in a $50 million sports betting ring that netted 25 individuals stateside.

Atlantic City Evacuated Ahead of Hurricane Sandy

With Hurricane Sandy potentially making a direct hit on the United States second largest gambling destination, mandatory evacuations were ordered for Atlantic City's casinos.

Emergency officials said Sunday afternoon's low tide looked similar to that of a typical high tide.

"We have to play the hand we've been dealt and unfortunately this is a bad hand," Mayor Lorenzo Langford told the Associated Press on Sunday. 

All Atlantic City casinos were shuttered by Sunday afternoon with the storm expected to ravage the coastal city Monday into Tuesday.

Hurricane Sandy had been briefly downgraded to a tropical storm before becoming a hurricane once again early Saturday afternoon.  Current models have the storm making a direct impact on Atlantic City.

On Saturday morning, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie declared a state of emergency as the storm moved up the East Coast.

Cleveland (Associated Press) — A new northeast Ohio casino is reaching out to gamblers of Asian descent with events tailored to Asian tastes and hosts that handle tasks for those bettors — including arranging for complimentary meals or hotel stays.

The Horseshoe Casino Cleveland is among U.S. casinos catering to the ethnic group. Those players are important to the Ohio casino, where two baccarat tables are regularly packed with players of Asian descent  — primarily Chinese — who might spend hours there, The Plain Dealer reported.

Cantor Gaming Sportsbook Director Michael Colbert Released on Bail

The Sportsbook Director for Cantor Gaming, Michael Colbert, has been released on $50,000 bail Friday.

Colbert, 32, was one of 25 individuals charged with conspiracy, money laundering and enterprise corruption in connection with a $50 million sports betting enterprise with ties to Pinnacle Sports in Curacao.

Colbert is scheduled to appear Monday in Las Vegas Justice Court.

MajorWager.com Founder Russ Hawkins Killed in Plane Crash

The founder of one of the most successful sports betting posting forums, MajorWager.com, has passed away.

Russ Hawkins, 47, of Guelph, Ontario, was killed in a plane crash Thursday afternoon after a float plane he was piloting plowed into trees at the edge of Puslinch Lake in Ontario, Canada. 

OPP Insp. Scott Lawson, commander of the Wellington County detachment, said there were two men aboard the aircraft.  The second individual was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Underage Children Learning How to Play Online Poker Via Free Sites Say Researchers

WESTBROOK, Conn. (Associated Press) — Online gambling is making regulation more difficult, luring children to gambling and introducing new types of problem gambling, a British researcher told a conference on Thursday.

Mark Griffiths, professor of gambling studies at Nottingham Trent University, told a few hundred participants at a conference sponsored by the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling that technology will make gambling more accessible as gamblers turn to online sites and avoid casinos.

Cantor Gaming Director Michael Colbert, PinnacleSports Owners Indicted

Michael Colbert, the Sportsbook Director for Cantor Gaming, was arrested early Wednesday morning in Las Vegas along with seven other individuals whose names have since been released.  A total of 25 arrests were made nationwide Wednesday.  The 259 page indictment charges these individuals with Enterprise Corruption, Money Laundering, Promoting Gambling and Conspiracy.

Mike Colbert Arrest a Black Eye for Nevada Gaming Control Board

As Nevada is set to begin legalizing online poker, it may also face a serious setback following news that M Resorts Sportsbook Director, Mike Colbert, has been arrested and charged on eight counts of conspiracy, money laundering and enterprise corruption.

Specifics of this arrest are forthcoming on Thursday 11 am ET as New York prosecutors are set to hold a press conference.  The investigation is being conducted by the Queens District Attorney's Office, long notorious for going after operatives of offshore sports betting businesses.
