For this year's FIFA World Cup, the best way to place bets online from North Carolina will be with bitcoin using a cryptocurrency wallet that can be linked to one's banking account. In May 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that individual states can offer legalized sports betting but must first develop regulatory instruments before doing so. There are laws on the books that would need to be repealed or amended before sports betting could take place here.
This is also a conservative state that doesn't look too kindly on gambling. State legislators are not exactly rushing to push for regulation.
The state does have a lottery and a casino on Cherokee land. That's about it.
“Our gambling statutes go back to 1891,” said Jeff Welty, an associate professor at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government. “We’ve got a pretty long uninterrupted history of not allowing gambling, but the world’s changing. That history can be set aside if the General Assembly chooses to do so.”
Needless-to-say, North Carolina gamblers will need to rely on international websites to place all their World Cup bets.
