Paddy Power Takes Swipe at ‘Fat, Lazy Footballers’ in ‘Ball of Shame’ Ad (Video)

Ireland’s largest bookmaker, Paddy Power, debuted its latest ad during this past weekend’s Arsenal v Tottenham FA Cup game on ITV.  The so-called “Ball of Shame” advertisement takes a swipe at “lazy, fat footballers”.

More specifically, the betting firm seems to take issue with aforementioned “lazy, fat footballers” also making millions of pounds (dollars).

Frank de Boer Favorite to be Named Tottenham Hotspur Manager After Sacking

Following the sacking of Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas this week, bookies have pegged Frank de Boer as the next permanent manager of the football club.  De Boer was coming in at 2/1 odds at most online bookmakers.

The sacking came just a day after Tottenham got shutout by Liverpool 5-0. 

A statement from the club read: "The club can announce that agreement has been reached with Head Coach, Andre Villas-Boas, for the termination of his services.  The decision was by mutual consent and in the interests of all parties."

Two Footballers Out on Bail in Widespread Match Fixing Case

Two non-league footballers implicated as part of a sweeping match-fixing scheme are now out on bail until Friday.

Michael Boateng and Hakeem Adelakun, both 22, play for Whitehawk FC, based in Brighton, in the Conference South.

The pair are accused of conspiring to defraud bookmakers by influencing match outcomes in various games and placing bets.

Several other footballers have been arrested for their ties to match fixing in recent weeks.

Two People Charged in Football Match Fixing Scheme

Two individuals have been charged over alleged match-fixing in English football, the National Crime Agency (NCA) told the BBC on Friday.

Singapore national Chann Sankaran, 33, and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, 43, were charged with conspiracy to defraud.

They were among six people held earlier this week, and a seventh person has now been arrested.

Michael Chopra Witness in Drug Trial Related to Gambling Debts

Former Newcastle and Sunderland footballer, Michael Chopra, is set to be called to the witness stand during a 750,000 cocaine trial involving an alleged “drugs factory” on Wearside, England.

Police officers in 2010 discovered £50,000 in cash hidden in a Jaguar they claimed was drug money.  That money, according to authorities, actually belonged to Chopra, who had mounting debts and turned to loan sharks in order to pay them off.

Professional Footballers’ Association to Institute Blanket Ban on Gambling by Employees

The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) will no longer permit its employees to gamble following the embarrassment that came about with revelations that union chief executive Gordon Taylor placed more than £4million on 2,000 bets.  He’s also is reported to owe at least one bookmaker over £100,000.

The action is being implemented for the ‘integrity of the union’.

PFA Pledges Full Support for Gambling Chief Gordon Taylor

LONDON (Reuters) - England's Professional Footballers' Association pledged its full support for chief executive Gordon Taylor on Thursday following newspaper allegations that he ran up gambling debts of over 100,000 pounds.

The Sun said that Taylor, who has been in the role since 1981, had gambled four million pounds in 2000 bets over two-and-half years, and owed a now-defunct telephone betting firm just over 100,000 pounds.
