TALLAHASSEE (Associated Press) -- As the NFL season kicks off, another big contest may be soon be played in the halls of the Florida Capitol.

The growing fantasy sports industry, which is already subjecting television viewers to a barrage of wall-to-wall advertising with the new football season, is now setting its sights on getting the blessings of the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature.

So finally Congress has decided to act on the explosive world of Daily Fantasy Sports, though most experts agree they are probably a bit too late to act.

Chinese Celebrity Guo Meimei Sentenced to Five Years for Running Illegal Casino

(Reuters) - Chinese celebrity Guo Meimei who gained notoriety for flaunting a jet-set lifestyle, apparently while working for a charity, was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday for running a casino, the Xinhua state news agency reported.

Guo hit the headlines in 2011 after posting photos online showing her in a Maserati sports car and carrying expensive handbags.

At the time, she said she was general manager of an organization under the Red Cross Society of China, a state-backed charity. The charity denied any link to her.

New Jersey Sports Betting Push Not Over Just Yet

NEWARK (Associated Press) - A motion has been filed in a federal appeals court that seeks a rehearing of last month’s ruling rejecting New Jersey’s sports betting law.

Betfair, Paddy Power Reach Agreement on 6 billion Pound Tie-Up

(Reuters) - Betfair (BETF.L) and Irish rival Paddy Power (PLSA.I) have reached agreement on a 6 billion pound combination, first set out last month and designed to secure leadership of Britain's competitive online gambling market.

As in a provisional deal announced in August, Paddy Power shareholders will own 52 percent of the group with Betfair investors owning the rest, if the deal is approved by shareholders, Betfair said on Tuesday.

Australia to Begin Cracking Down on Online Gambling Sites

CANBERRA, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Australia is set to crack down on illegal offshore gambling, with Social Services Minister Scott Morrison flagging a review of betting operators conducting business in Australia.

Morrison said on Monday that while online betting and gambling is a 1.1 billions U.S. dollar industry in Australia, more than 60 percent of operators do not pay tax.
