Wrong Tournament: Poker Player WPT World Championship Win Out of Mistake

Asher Conniff of Brooklyn, New York, accidentally registered for a big-bucks Atlantic City poker tournament, and the rest is history.  He walked away the winner and pocketed a cool $973,000.

The 25-year-old tells the New York Daily News he was supposed to be attending a family vacation with his mom last week but instead had to play in the tournament.

“She wasn’t too upset,” said Conniff after his triumph at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. “She was happy I was going to play and she’s super-ecstatic now.”

PokerStars Shakes Up European Poker Tour Schedule for Season 12

ONCHAN, Isle of Man – PokerStars, an Amaya Inc. (TSX: AYA) company, today announced six stops for the forthcoming 12th season of its European Poker Tour – kicking off with the EPT’s most popular poker festival, in Barcelona in August. Six destinations have been confirmed so far, with a seventh to be determined for March. All those confirmed will run in conjunction with PokerStars’ national and regional live tours.

AG Files Charges Against Seals With Clubs Bitcoin Online Poker Site CEO

Online Poker Bill In California to Move Through Committee Vote for First Time

After years of trying and failing, a bill to legalize online poker in the state of California will be moving through Committee for voting.  It is the first time a version of Web poker legislation has gotten this far in the state legislature.

California is considered the golden goose in the world of US-state i-poker regulation.  Alone, the state represents the world’s 8th largest economy.  To date, only New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware have passed similar legislation.

Law Firm Talks Violation of Poker Pro Paul Phua Rights as Part of FBI Ruse

In a case testing the boundaries of how far the government can go when creating a ruse to access a suspect’s premises, a U.S. District Court in Nevada concluded that the government’s disruption of internet service to a hotel room in order to generate a service call, and allow access by government agents, violated the Fourth Amendment rights of the hotel guest.

New Credit Card Merchant Number May Boost State Online Gambling Acceptance

Evidence Ordered Thrown Out in Phua FBI Ruse Case

A federal judge has ordered most of the evidence against poker pro Paul Phua thrown out as part of an FBI probe that apparently went a little too far. 

Phua and other alleged co-conspirators were said to have been running a World Cup betting ring from their villa at the Caesar’s Palace.  FBI agents posed as cable repairmen to gain access.

Former Poker Pro Alex Jacob Ends ‘Jeopardy!’ Run

Former poker pro turned day trader Alex Jacob has ended his six-day winning streak on “Jeopardy!”

Jacob had won $129,401 after six victories on the popular U.S. game show, garnering somewhat of a groupie following. 

The one time 2006 US Poker Championship was perhaps most notable by some observers for wearing the same shirt each night. 

He is one of the most successful of “Jeopardy!” contestants and could appear on a future championship show.

Chinese Authorities Shut Down PokerStars Sponsored Tournament

In their continued crackdown on gambling, Chinese authorities shut down a poker tournament sponsored by the world’s largest real money online poker site PokerStars this weekend.

The APPT tournament, which was set to take place in the city of Nanjing, underwent a raid by the Chinese National Police on Friday.

Harry Reid Vows to Help Adelson With Internet Gambling Prohibition Bill

Outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid has said he will assist in any way possible to push through legislation banning most forms of Internet gambling, including poker.

‘Honey Trap’ Gang Kicked Professional Poker Player to Death

Care assistant Leonie Granger, 25, has been convicted of manslaughter in the brutal murder of a professional poker player.

Granger set up a “honey trap” for 56-year-old Mehmet Hassan, who was kicked to death by her boyfriend, Kyrron Jackson, 28, and another man, Nicholas Chandler, 29.

2006 US Poker Championship Winner Winning Again on ‘Jeopardy!’

Alex Jacob, winner of the 2006 US Poker Championship and its $878,500 cash prize, stopped playing poker after a 2012 World Series appearance.

He resurfaced last week on the popular U.S. game show “Jeopardy!” winning a cool $48,000 heading into Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Jacob went up another $36,000.
